How Marketplace coverage works

Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans are major medical plans sold through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Every plan covers the essential health benefits, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, maternity care, mental health, and preventive care, and none can turn you down for a pre-existing condition.

Help paying your premium

Depending on your household income and size, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers your monthly payment. Lower-income households can also qualify for cost-sharing reductions that cut deductibles and copays on Silver plans. Our quote tool calculates this for you before you pick a plan.

Metal levels at a glance

  • Bronze has the lowest premiums and the highest out-of-pocket costs. It fits people who mostly want protection against a big medical bill.
  • Silver sits in the middle and is the only level with extra cost-sharing savings for qualifying incomes.
  • Gold costs more each month but pays more when you get care. It works well if you see doctors often.

When you can enroll

Open Enrollment starts November 1 each year. Outside of Open Enrollment you'll need a qualifying life event, like losing job-based coverage, moving to a new area, getting married, or having a baby. Not sure if you qualify? Call us and we'll check.

Are you an enrolled tribal member? You may qualify for a plan with $0 copays and can enroll any month. See Native American plans.

What to have ready

  • ZIP code and date of birth for everyone who needs coverage
  • Your best estimate of this year's household income
  • Names of your doctors and prescriptions, so we can check networks and formularies

Between jobs or missed Open Enrollment?

Short-term medical can bridge the gap. It isn't ACA coverage, so we'll walk you through the trade-offs.
