Native American health plans

Special coverage protections for American Indians and Alaska Natives. Enrolled tribal members can get Marketplace plans with $0 copays and can enroll any month of the year.

What tribal members qualify for

The Health Insurance Marketplace gives American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) opportunities for affordable coverage through Marketplace plans, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Zero cost-sharing plans

If you're an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or an ANCSA shareholder and your household income is between 100% and 300% of the federal poverty level, you can enroll in a zero cost-sharing plan. That means no deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance when you get care, on any metal level.

Indian Health Care Providers

When you get services from an Indian Health Care Provider, you won't pay out-of-pocket costs like copays, coinsurance, or deductibles, regardless of your income. This also applies to Purchased and Referred Care. Your Marketplace plan adds to IHS or your tribal clinic. It doesn't replace it.

Enroll any month

You aren't limited to Open Enrollment. Tribal members can enroll in or change Marketplace plans once a month, all year long.

About premiums

You aren't exempt from monthly premiums, but like all Americans you may qualify for tax credits that lower them based on income. For many families, a Bronze plan combined with zero cost-sharing costs little or nothing each month.

Documents to confirm tribal status

The Marketplace asks for proof of American Indian or Alaska Native status. Any one of these is accepted:

  • Tribal enrollment or membership card from a federally recognized tribe
  • Document issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) recognizing you as American Indian or Alaska Native
  • Authentic document from a federally recognized tribe declaring your membership
  • Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood
  • Certificate of Indian Status card
  • I-872 American Indian Card (Texas and Oklahoma Kickapoo members)
  • Document issued by the Indian Health Service (IHS) showing you were or are eligible for IHS services as an American Indian or Alaska Native
  • U.S. American Indian or Alaska Native tribal enrollment or shareholder documentation
  • Letter from the Marketplace granting a tribal exemption based on tribal membership or Alaska Native shareholder status

Serving tribal communities across Utah

Ryan Conrad has spent years helping tribal members enroll in coverage and has spoken to groups like the Little Feathers organization in Salt Lake City about how these plans work. If you lead a tribal program or community group, we're happy to come talk.
